The Four Seasons Hotel in Silicon Valley… let’s not kid anyone (it’s East Palo Alto), has a very lovely restaurant called Quattro. We’ve always had a wonderful experience there in every way whether it was cocktails by the fireplace, lunch on the pool deck, or a multi-course dinner during the holidays. Valentine’s Day 2015 was no exception in terms of the spectacular dining experience, complete with sabered champagne.

Unfortunately, the cocktail experience wasn’t so wonderful. Quattro decided to offer a “house made gin”, and while we applaud their ambition, the results were lacking. We ordered their house made gin and tonic cocktail, and were served what the bartender had made with the best intentions. Unfortunately, the execution failed as the result was a bottle of flat tonic, and vodka infused with an unbalanced mix of items that normally make gin.

What the mixologist could’ve done was infuse the vodka with juniper and various botanicals, and then either separately make the tonic, or use any number of purchasable fine tonics.

Well, our loss in gin and tonics is our gain of finding a gin bad enough to give a 1-2 star review!

While these particular cocktails were significantly subpar, the Four Seasons Quattro remains one of our favorite places, not only for dinner but for cocktails as well. Since these mixes change based on bartender and feedback, we look forward to trying again as we do like the concept.
