Gins best for Martinis

The Martini is 12 parts gin and 2 parts vermouth. Pour all ingredients into mixing glass with ice cubes. Stir. Strain in chilled martini cocktail glass. Squeeze oil from lemon peel onto the drink, or garnish with olive. There are numerous variations on the Martini, and all are acceptable as long as they contain gin. Note that James Bond would order a “vodka martini; shaken, not stirred” which is wrong on many levels, but he also invented the Vesper, which still makes him our hero. While the origin of the Martini is unclear, we’re going to go with the story that it was invented in the 1860s by a bartender in San Francisco for passengers of a ferry headed to Martinez, California.
